These special collections contain many rare, fragile and unique items which can require certain handling conditions. Please comply with care and handling guidelines and follow instructions given by reading room staff.
- Store bags in lockers on Lower Ground 1 level
- No food or drink is permitted in the Special Collections Reading Room
- Use items at designated tables
- Only use pencils for note taking
- Do not remove fragile items from protective containers
- Gloves may be required to handle items
- Return all items to staff when not in use
When using Manuscripts collections:
- Consult only one box at a time, and use only one folder at a time
- Keep all papers in the order in which you find them, even if you believe they are not in a proper order. We preserve the original order of such archival collections
When using Maps, large Pictures, Broadsides or other large format ephemera:
- Use the large tables
- Ask for staff assistance to move large items on and off trolleys
