Tags

Tags are keywords or labels you can apply to items in Trove. A tag can be anything you want it to be; it could describe a topic, a place, an event, or a note on for a research topic. An article on the opening of the Sydney Opera House could be tagged with:

  • ceramic tiles
  • Queen Elizabeth II
  • Bella
  • 3/11/12
  • needtoplate
  • not read

To view all articles that have been associated with a particular tag, just click on the tag link, this will perform a search in Trove. Tags may also be searched for, using the search operator ‘publictag:’, for example: ‘publictag:lighthouse’. 

Add a tag to an article

  1. When viewing an article click on the ‘Tags’ Tag icon button in the side bar.
  2. Click Add tag icon
  3. Type in the keyword you wish to use as a tag. If you do not want the tag to be public make sure you tick the ‘Keep my tag private’ box before you save.

Editing a tag

Tags can’t be edited, if you wish to edit a tag you should delete it and add a new one.

Comments

Comments are notations added by users. These can help you and other users find out more information about an item, such as the names of the people in a photograph, or to provide further context to an article.

A comment can contain any information relevant to an item, adding information about events or provide links to related items in Trove. When you create a comment, you can choose whether to make it public (anyone can see it and search for it), or private (only you can see it). You can only add a private comment if you have logged in. 

Add a comment to an article

  1. When viewing an article click on the ‘Comments’ Comment icon button in the sidebar.
  2. Click Add comment icon
  3. Type in your comment. If you do not want the comment to be public make sure you tick the ‘Keep my comment private’ box before you save.

How do I delete a comment or a tag?

You may only delete a comment or tag that you have added while logged into Trove. If you find a comment or tag that you believe is in breach of the Trove terms of use please contact us.

To delete a comment

  1. Login to Trove with the account you used to create the comment
  2. Navigate to the article or item that you have added the comment to
  3. Open the comments widget located in the left-hand column on newspaper articles or click on the ‘Comments’ link located on the right-hand side of all other items
  4. Click ‘remove’ or to edit a comment instead, click ‘edit’.

To delete a tag

  1. Login to Trove with the account you used to create the tag
  2. Navigate to the article or item that you have added a tag to
  3. For newspaper articles, click on the small 'x' that appears next to the tag
  4. For all other items, click on the ‘Tags’ link located on the right-hand side and then click on the small ‘x’ that appears next to the tag you wish to delete.

Lists

Lists are collection of articles and resources relating to a topic. Lists are an excellent way to store articles for reference and can assist other researchers in finding the right articles for their own topical research.

Add an article to your list

You must be logged in to use the list function:

  1. When viewing an article click on the ‘Lists’ List icon button in the side bar on the left hand side of the screen.
  2. Click Add to list icon if you are not logged in you will instead be prompted to Login icon
  3. If you already have a list you wish to add the article to, tick the list and click save. You can add the article to multiple lists.
  4. If you cannot find the list to which you want to add the article, select the ‘Find a list’ icon Find a list icon.
  5. If you do not have a list you can create one by selecting the ‘Create a new list’ icon Create a list icon. Name the list, provide a description or comments and save. If you do not want the list to be public make sure you tick the ‘Keep this list private’ box before you save.

Remove an article from a list

You can remove an item from one of your lists in your Trove user account:

  1. Click on your user account in the top right hand corner of the screen
  2. Click on lists
  3. Click on the list you wish to edit and find the item you wish to remove
  4. Click on the “item options” drop down and select the ‘remove item’ option
  5. Confirm your selection

You can also remove an article from one of your lists while you are viewing that article (you must be logged in to remove an item):

  1. Click on the Lists button in the sidebar
  2. Determine which list you would like to remove the article from (if more than one list appears)

Click the “x” beside the list title to remove the article

Edit or Delete a list

  1. Click on your user account in the top right hand corner of the screen
  2. Click on lists
  3. Click on the list you wish to edit
  4. Click on the “List options” drop down in the list title box and select the option you wish to perform
  5. When removing all items or deleting the list you will be asked you to confirm your selection
