Browsing in Newspapers

Getting started

Browsing can be a useful alternative to searching for a specific article or subject. Trove’s digitised newspapers allow browsing using a series of columns that start with a small range of broad facets and allow you to browse all the way to specific articles. As you decide which facets best suits your requirements a new column will open. You can switch between selections easily by selecting a new facet from any previous column.

Browse Newspapers

Click on one of the buttons under ‘Browse’ and this will open up the ‘Browse by’ column.

Categories

Categories are article types such as: ‘Advertising’ or ‘Family notices’. Categories help to refine the browse, search and filter functions in Trove’s Newspaper zone.

Date

You can browse or filter your search using a specific date range. Trove organises date ranges by decade, year, month etc. If you are looking for information on a particular event from multiple publications then filtering by date can assist in finding a broad range of related articles.

State

Browsing by state will enable you to locate a specific newspaper based on where the publication was offered for sale.

Title

If you know the title of the publication you are looking for you can browse for it alphabetically. Newspaper’s titles may change depending on the date on which they were published, so you may need to browse for variations of the title.

Tags

Tags are community generated notations. Tags will tend to be subjective and may reflect common rather than technical language. The ‘Tag’ browse function will re-direct you to the tags cloud page, from here you can filter your results. Log in to Trove to browse your own tags.

Browsing in Gazette

Categories

Categories are article types such as: ‘Notices’ or ‘Proclamations and Legislation’. Categories help to refine the browse, search and filter functions in Trove’s Gazette zone.

Date

You can browse or filter your search using a specific date range. Trove organises date ranges by decade, year, month etc. If you are looking for information on a particular event from multiple publications then filtering by date can assist in finding a broad range of related articles.

State

Browsing by place will enable you to locate a specific gazette based on where the publication was available.

Title

If you know the title of the publication you are looking for you can browse for it alphabetically. Gazette’s titles may change depending on the date on which they were published, so you may need to browse for variations of the title. If you are unsure of a gazette’s alternative title click on the view title info (link to below)

Tags

Issue Number

Government Gazettes are assigned an issue number within each publication year. If you know the year and issue number you are looking for you can browse by issue.   

Indexes only

Each year Government Gazettes collate data for an annual index. If you are looking for a specific individual or Act you can browse the gazette indexes to determine the year and issue in which a notification has been published.

Browsing Help

Try to focus on what you already know, for example, if you have a date range that you wish to focus on select ‘Date’, in gazettes you then be prompted to refine your results, select the date range or facet that you feel reflects your needs most accurately and continue on, you will be prompted to enter more specific values as you move along.

Browse help

Keep choosing what interests you until and you will arrive at a list of newspapers that were published on a specific day or articles that relate to your specific area of interest.

You can go back at any time by clicking one of the links in any of the preceding columns, this will reset the range or facets that you which to browse. If you wish to return to earlier columns, click on the grey column with an inset arrow on the left of the browse panel.

To exit the browsing columns select your preferred article. To exit without browsing to an article click on the ‘Close browse panel’ button in the bottom left corner of the panel or click on the X on the top right.

Title Information

You can access a newspapers catalogue data through the browse panel.  Select browse by ‘Title’ and select the first letter of the newspaper for which you are searching. Move your mouse over the title that matches your preferred range and a small blue information icon will appear. 

Browse help newspapers

Click on the icon to open the title information panel, to view more information about this title click the ‘View full title information’ button.
